ROTTERDAM, N.Y. – Multiple evacuations occurred in Rotterdam after a water main break Monday morning.

The break occurred in the vicinity of 321 Princetown Road at 1:30 a.m..

The town is experiencing road closures at the following locations: Princetown Road from Five Corners intersection to Wellington Avenue, Mariaville Road from Five Corners intersection to Phillips Street, and Curry Road from North Wescott Road to Five Corners.

The Schenectady County Department of Environmental Health has issued a boil water order for all of the Town of Rotterdam as a precautionary measure in response to the break.

Many residents of Rotterdam spent the day without electricity and water, and four houses had to be evacuated after a water main burst, flooding the street and creating a danger for those who lived nearby.

"I woke up with someone pounding my door and telling me to get out as fast as I can,” said Carrie Grattin, one of the four families evacuated.

She says not only was her yard filled with water, but it made it inside her home as well.

"I’m hoping I can get the foot of water out of my cellar, right now it’s a mess, everything is trashed,” she said.

Even officials are calling this the biggest break they've ever seen. The pressure of the break was enough to burst through asphalt, also causing two other pipes to burst as well.

"The infrastructure is old in Rotterdam, the pipes at any given time, any night; you can always have a water main break,” said Larry Lamora, Highway Superintendent.

And while Grattin and fellow residents are left without power and access to their street, she says as far as she is concerned, the incident is over and she is ready to push forward.

"You know something, I’m safe, we’re alive, my pets are ok, I’m back with my pets, that’s all I care about,” she said.

All city offices have closed for the day.
