LATHAM, N.Y.— A truck and a school bus would have collided Thursday if it weren’t for the quick thinking of the truck driver.
Bus driver Anita Martin was nearing the end of her daily route Thursday on Route 7 in Latham with a student and bus aide when she noticed an oncoming truck had blown out its front tire.
"We were headed towards each other," she said.
The truck driver crossed the lane and headed through the guardrail down an embankment instead of crashing into the bus. Martin immediately called to get help for the truck driver who she was sure made a conscious decision to avoid the bus.
"He just had no thought of his own safety at that moment," she said. "[By] not stepping on the break and turning the wheel to avoid us was just self-sacrificing on his part."
Director of Transportation John Myers acknowledged the truck driver's brave intuition adding it could have been a tragic turn of events.
"You know school bus drivers are heroes every day, and we like it when somebody else does that for us too," he said.
Martin said she had never encountered such a close call in her 20 years as a driver.
