ALBANY, N.Y. – It’s a case of mistaken identity for a World War II veteran, but Senator Chuck Schumer believes they can get his case straightened out.

Dr. Thomas Smith recently discovered that the military had mistaken him for a soldier who went AWOL during World War II, and now he is fighting to clear his good name.

“They mixed him up with somebody else. Now we’ve straightened that out, and we think we can break though the red tape and get home what he deserves,” Schumer said. “He is 90, and we’re trying to get the military bureaucracy which is hard thing to move as quickly as possible.”

Smith is working on his memoirs. As part of his research, he decided to request his military records and that’s when he made the discovery.
