A man is dead after a confrontation with an Albany County Sherriff's Deputy.
The department says at this point they believe that deputy was following procedure. It happened about 12-30 this morning. That's when police say Deputy Vincent Igoe found a man walking along Watervliet Shaker Road near the Albany International Airport.
Deputy Igoe who is assigned to the airport was making security checks around the property. Police say they were suspicious of a man walking here late at night. Investigators say when Deputy Igoe tried to question the man the confrontation turned deadly.
Bob Ward lives on the street and said "I heard two pops..pop..pop it sounded to me like gunfire.
Kathryn reilly also lives on the street and said “I saw the sirens and heard all the noises looked out my bedroom window police held flashlight on a guy laying face down on the ground with his hands layed out to the side.”
People who live on Watervliet Shaker Road were shaken, after having a clear view of last night's scene.
An Albany County Sheriffs Deputy shot and killed a man walking near Albany International Airport.
Sheriff James Campell said “That road is dark you see someone walking your are going to inquire as to what you are doing here its unlit and very commercial.”
The department says Deputy Vincent Igoe spotted the man and stopped to ask what he was doing in the area.
Once Igoe got out of his car, the man responded by throwing a piece of concrete at him. Deputy Igoe then tried to distance himself from the man.
That's when the man allegedly charged towards the deputy with one hand in his pocket and the other behind him.
Undersheriff Craig Apple said "Within 15 feet if someone tries to charge at you ,you have one split second to make up your mind of what you want to do.”
Police say the man raised his arm and thats when Igoe decided to shoot. The unidentified man was shot twice, taken to Albany Medical Center where he died.
He is described as a hispanic male and had no identification on him. Undersheriff apple says “He coudl be an illegal alien but there is no way of knowing at this point. The investigation is continuing.
Sheriff Campbell says right now it appears that deputy Igoe was following the rules of the district when it comes to deadly force. Undersheriff Craig Apple also says that the department does have tasers.
Currently only supervisors carry them, but there is an order out currently, and soon the rest of the department will be supplied one.
The man did not have a weapon on him.
