A Marine with local ties is killed in Afghanistan.

A family friend says U.S. Marine Cpl. Philip Charte had just turned 22.

His family currently lives in the Village of Salem.

The family friend says Charte was killed Monday-supporting combat operations in Afganistan.

The office of New Hampshire Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter confirms it received a death notification.

Charte was stationed at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina and had just been home this summer visiting family.

The family friend says he grew up in neighboring Cambridge then moved to New Hampshire.

That's where he graduated from high school in 2007.

Messages on his Facebook page tonight are ones of sorrow and love.

Details are still coming in but his body is expected to be brought back later this week, services will be held next week.
