ALBANY, N.Y.  – Parents and educators are taking part in the Day of Action Monday to rally for an investment in public education supported by more than 100 organizations across the state.

Parents and educators are calling for fair funding for public schools and colleges, a three-year moratorium on high-stakes consequences of state standardized tests and a renewed focus on teaching and learning instead of testing.

“Two-thirds of the state’s school districts are currently operating with less state aid than in 2008-2009,” Carl Korn, Chief Press Officer for the New York State United Teachers organization, said. “Those cuts have devastated programs that help children.”

The Day of Action kicks-off at 7 a.m. at Nyack High School with NYSUT President Richard Iannuzzi and American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten. The day-long events were organized by the AFT, the National Education Association and more than 100 other organizations.

The Albany Day of Action will take place at noon in the Legislative Office Building in the Capitol. Speakers will include the Troy Teacher’s Association and Shenendehowa’s Parent-Teacher Association.

The Day of Action events will highlight solutions aimed at ensuring every child in New York State receives a high-quality public education from pre-K through college. Participants will be wearing blue in solidarity.
