CLIFTON PARK, N.Y. – The Stewart family is raising money for a new press box at Shenendehowa High School to honor Chris Stewart.

Chris Stewart and Deanna Rivers were killed in a car accident on the Northway in December 2012.  Bailey Wind and Matt Hardy survived the crash but were severely injured.

The community has  supported the Stewart family ever since the accident.

“The community has been nothing short of spectacular for the past year and three months now,” Chris’s dad, Mike, said.

The Stewarts are leading a fundraiser to renovate the old Shenendehowa press box to thank everyone for their support and to keep their son’s memory alive. They plan to rename the box the Christopher Stewart Media Box.

Chris was the 2012 football team captain, and Mike said he would have loved the idea.

“To see his name somewhere within the Shen football stadium and potentially having a press box named after him; he’s gotta be smiling right now,” he said.

Chris’s mom, Regina, said thinking of her son helps the family to move forward.

“It’s exciting for us, and we haven’t had too much excitement that really has made our hearts happy,” she said.

Between fundraising and building, the Stewarts think the modernized press box will be ready for the 2014-15 football season.

“We just appreciate every dollar that goes into it, and we really look forward to the day we have the ribbon cutting and invite the public to come and see what they’ve done,” Regina said.

Dennis Drue, 24, was sentenced to five to 15 years in State Prison for causing the accident. An investigation found Drue was high on marijuana, drunk, speeding and texting during the time of the crash.

Regina said she hopes the new press box will is not only about remembering Chris, but to also remind kids about the importance of making good decisions.
