LATHAM, N.Y. – Students will begin filling school hallways in the coming days, and many teachers across the Capital Region are getting back inside the classroom to prepare for the year ahead.

In North Colonie schools teachers are spending the next two days in workshops. From hanging up posters, checking on school supplies, and curriculums, teachers say students aren't the only ones with back to school checklists.

"We do an extensive amount of summer curriculum work over the summer, we talk about new and creative ways to approach subject content,” said North Colonie superintendent Joe Corr.

Despite all of the meetings and preparations though, English teacher Pamela Burns says it's really the first day and welcoming students that teachers look forward to.

"Suddenly the building goes from being just filled with adults looking frazzled to, to filled with teenagers and that's a better sight,” said Burns.

For many teachers, January 1 doesn't mark the New Year, the first day of school does. Along with the first day of a new year, comes resolutions and reflection.

"You kind of look back on what went the previous year, what maybe you would do to change and you're always trying to grow and move forward,” said Krasten Calahan, Shaker High School teacher.

Calahan has worked at Shaker High School for the last five years, and much like her kids she has a check list of her own.

"It's nice to get into your room and be able to get some hands on things before the kids get in on Thursday,” she said.

North Colonie schools are set to start on Thursday, but on Wednesday, freshmen will be welcomed into the halls for an orientation at 9:30 a.m.
