MENANDS, N.Y. – Wednesday is Free Shipping Day, and thousands are expected to turn to online shopping for the event.
Free Shipping Day is a one-day, online shopping event when thousands of retailers offer free shipping with guaranteed delivery by Christmas Eve. It began in 2008 by Luke Knowles and his wife, the founders of freeshipping.org.
In 2011, Free Shipping Day generated more than $1 billion in online sales with over 2,600 merchants registered to participate, and the numbers continue to grow. The event has also expanded to include Canada.
Free Shipping Day beat Black Friday’s online spending two years in a row by over $250 million and became the third-heaviest day for online shopping in U.S. history two years after it was created.
