EAST GREENBUSH, N.Y. – A gazebo was destroyed last week, and the Town of East Greenbush is looking to raise money to help with the project.
Eagle Scout Adam Scirico said he was shocked to find the gazebo that earned him is Eagle Scout title five years ago was completely destroyed.
“When I looked across the lake, I saw it was doing,” he said. “I spun around because it was someone from the town there cleaning it up, so I asked him what happened.”
Police said they were alerted by neighbors when neighbors saw four people breaking the structure at Hampton Lake Park around 11 p.m.
Police arrested James Couse, 21, Lucas Lapins, 19, Tyler McKiernan, 19, and Austin Wagar, 18. All four were charged with Trespassing, Unlawful Possession of Alcohol, Criminal Mischief and Conspiracy.
“It was kind of devastating to see that destroyed with the amount of will that went into it not just by me but a lot of people I know,” Scirico said. “The community really seemed to like it.”
The East Greenbush Town Supervisor said he is working with Scirico to replace the project, which Scirico raised funds for when he built it. But some neighbors said there’s a bigger problem to take care of first.
“People are going to hesitate because there’s still fear that if they build another one, are they just going to rip it down again?” resident Tom Jerome said. “So something has to be done to control the situation. If it means putting gates on the park to keep them out after dark, then that’s what they got to do or at least I hope that’s what they’re going to do.”
