TROY, N.Y. - A Rensselaer County family who endured a terrible tragedy in 2012, turned their pain into joy for children.
Tyler McIntyre was only six-years-old when he died in a car accident in February 2012. Tyler loved Christmas, his favorite part was giving gifts. Now, his mother is honoring Tyler's love of generosity.
Tonya McIntyre created Toys From Tyler.
Almost 1,000 toys have been donated in honor of Tyler, between friends, family, coworkers and Tyler's friends from West Sand Lake Elementary.
All of the toys collected will be donated to the Concerns-U Center in Rensselaer County. The center is where parents, who are less fortunate, are able to come and pick out toys for their children.
Tonya said she knew she had to do this after last year's holiday season.
"Last year was my first Christmas without him, and I would go to the store and see things Tyler would like for Christmas and I was a mess," said Tonya. "Now I can put all of that energy into a toy drive. And this year I started this toy drive and now I can buy for another little boy that also would love it."
Tonya said this year's toy drive was such a huge success, she plans to do it every year. A wonderful way to honor Tyler's memory.
