Train accident in Schenectady ruled a suicide

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Schenectady Police Department confirms that the fatal train accident that happened on Saturday evening was a suicide.

According to police, authorities responded to the accident, which occurred around 8:45 p.m. on the train tracks near Congress Street and Tenth Avenue. 

The Amtrack train, traveling southbound, struck one male victim, causing fatal wounds, say Schenectady Police. 

The identity of the victim is unknown at this time. 

The Detective Division and Crime Scene Collection Unit with Schenectady Police are investigating the accident. 

Police say that the train number, its speed at the time of the accident, the amount of cars, its point of origin and its final destination are all unknown as on Saturday evening.  

There were no passengers on board the train at the time of the accident.  

The tracks in the area of Congress Street have been shut down while the investigation continues.
