MOHAWK, N.Y. - The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office is investigating a train derailment in the town of Mohawk Thursday morning.
The Sheriff's Office says 20 cars fell off the train rail around 8 a.m. in the area of Route 5 and Martin Road spilling cargo including soil and rice in the road. Investigators say it appears two trains going in opposite directions on parallel tracks may have side-swiped each other.
Emergency Crews from the Sheriff's Office, GAVAC Ambulance, Mohawk Fire Department, Montgomery County Emergency Management and HAZMAT are on scene.
The dispatcher tells the NEWS CENTER that residents in the immediate area have been notified. They say they are not evacuating anyone at this time.
Route 5 will be closed until further notice. Traffic is being rerouted on Route 5 between State Highway 334 in Mohawk and Route 10 in the town of Palatine. Motorists are asked to avoid the area.
