TROY, N.Y. - The Troy-Waterford Bridge, which crosses the Hudson River, has been closed after a crack was found in one of the structures.

Route 4, the 126th Street Bridge is closed between 2nd Avenue in Troy and 1st Street in Waterford. It will remain closed indefinitely.

“From what I understand, they found a small crack in one of the support beams,”

Engineers evaluated the structure on Friday afternoon and found an inch and a half long fracture on one of the beams that helps to hold the bridge up.

“You could have a localized failure of bridge not apparent if that would be catastrophic,” said a Troy engineer. “Looking at what kind of a repair would be needed to make the bridge safe for travelers.”

Travelers had to be turned away on Friday and were told to take a detour because the bridge was not safe to travel across, not even for pedestrians.

“We are going to keep this closed till we can evaluate the problem,” said an engineer, “Probably going to be a few days.”

Walter Khel, regularly drives over the bridge and will find the closure to be an inconvenience.

“My other daughter lives across the bridge, I am constantly going across,” said Khel.

Travelers are urged to use the 112th Street bridge while the Troy-Waterford bridge is closed.
