TROY, N.Y. – Samaritan Hospital and St. Mary’s Hospital of Troy have joined together to offer a one-mile walk with an area cardiologist for “Just Walk with a Doc,” a healthy heart program.

Walkers met at the Farmer’s Market on River Street Saturday morning to talk to a doctor about the benefits of just 30 minutes of physical activity, which doctors on-hand said could reduce the risk of heart disease, improve blood pressure and blood sugar levels, elevate mood, and reduce the risk of osteoporosis, cancer and diabetes.

The hospitals began offering the monthly walks two years ago, which are held at the farmer’s market during summer months and are moved indoors to the Robinson Gym at Russell Sage College during the winter.
