ALBANY, N.Y. – A new queen has been crowned as the City of Albany held its annual Tulip Queen Coronation in Washington Park.

The coronation has been happening for more than half a century and is one of Albany’s most trusted traditions.

Blooming with history and heritage, Albany’s Washington Park set the beautiful backdrop for the annual Tulip Queen Coronation.

The new Tulip Queen for 2014 is Caitlin Whelan, 20, a sophomore at Siena College. Whelan will take the reins to work with the rest of the court on programs centered on literacy advocacy for children in the city. The goal is to encourage children to enjoy reading and writing.

After the coronation on Saturday, the new queen joined with hundreds of others, enjoying the 100,000 tulips in Washington Park.
