VALLEY FALLS, N.Y. – The foundation of a Valley Falls home is giving way from heavy rain.
Flash flooding eroded the yard of a North Street home in Valley Falls Wednesday night. The water dug underneath the home leaving part of it without a foundation.
“Water ran down across Route 68 across these people’s property,” Chief Wesley Weeden of the Valley Falls Fire Department said. “The amount of rain in a short amount of time; the infrastructure just can’t handle it.”
The residents have been displaced because of concern the foundation may collapse with the continued falling rain.
“Code enforcement has been here, the people have been advised they cannot stay in the house tonight,” Weeden said. “The house at this time is not safe to enter.”
Firefighters sandbagged the front of the house to stabilize it until Thursday morning when crews can return and attempt to save the home.
“They are going to have to evaluate it because we have more rain coming tonight, supposedly, so we were going to evaluate the house again tomorrow morning,” Weeden said.
