NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The defense attorney for a man accused of cutting off the head of his disabled seven-year-old son said Friday that a judge has determined his client to be not guilty by reason of insanity.
Attorney Kerry Cuccia said the ruling, by state District Judge John LeBlanc, came Friday in the case against Jeremiah Wright. Cuccia said Wright, 32, will be returned to the state mental hospital in Jackson where he had been held.
Wright has been in custody since August 2011, when Jori Lirette -- a boy who required around-the-clock care and was fed through a tube -- was killed and his severed head left in the yard of their home.
Cuccia said prosecutors agreed to the ruling.
