POPE VALLEY, Calif. (AP) — Crews have the upper hand on a pair of wildfires at opposite ends of California that have each burned two houses.

A blaze in Northern California wine country is 65 percent contained while another to the south in San Diego County is at 70 percent containment.

Firefighters say there's still a lot of work left even though they've largely tamed the two wildfires.

The lingering threat of the Southern California fire and the need to use roads for the firefight forced the historic mining city to take the year off from its festive Fourth of July celebration that usually draws 3,000 to 5,000 people.

Neither fire has led to any injuries. The causes of both remained unknown.
