WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. officials are concerned al-Qaida is trying to develop a new bomb that could go undetected through airport security.
There is no indication such a bomb has been created or that there's a specific threat to the U.S., but the Obama administration called Wednesday for increased security at foreign airports with direct flights to the U.S.
One counterterrorism official said American intelligence has found indications that bomb makers from al-Qaida's Yemen affiliate have traveled to Syria to link up with the al-Qaida affiliate there and work on such a bomb. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly by name.
He said the enhanced security measures have been in the works for the past month.
