WASHINGTON (AP) — Disputes over federal spending and over fresh penalties against Iran have derailed legislation in the Senate that would have provided $21 billion for the nation's veterans, for medical, education and job-training benefits.
Republicans used a procedural move today to block the measure. But each party is blaming the other for turning the effort into a chess match aimed at forcing politically-embarrassing votes.
Republicans say they still favor helping veterans, but that they also want to be prudent about federal spending.
