Buffalo, N.Y. (AP) – Police said two teenage swimmers were pronounced dead after being pulled from a canal in Buffalo.
Local media report the pair had been underwater for about 30 minutes before police divers found them Thursday night in the Union Ship Canal in South Buffalo.
Police on Friday identified the victims as Alexis Matte, 16, of Buffalo and Dondre Herring, 17, of Lackawanna.
Witnesses said they appeared to be struggling before disappearing underwater.
Divers found them deep in the mucky water after a 19-minute search. They were given CPR, but were unresponsive.
The victims were swimming in an area known as a hangout for local youths. That section of the canal is blocked by a fence.
