Charlotte, N.C. - The Democratic National Convention begins today in North Carolina.
The highlight of the first day is expected to be the speech given in prime time tonight by First Lady Michelle Obama.
The president, who will accept the nomination Thursday, is not yet in Charlotte. He's on the road talking about the economy. "I stood with American workers. I stood with American manufacturing. I believed in you," he said.
Delegates will vote on a platform today which
- Calls for higher taxes on wealthier Americans
- Backs same-sex marriage
- Backs abortion rights
The Republican platform would
- Ban abortion and gay marriage
- Repeal President Obama's health care overhaul law
- Shift Medicare into a voucher-style program
