Rochester, N.Y. (AP) — Testimony is set to begin in the trial of two people charged with killing a high school teacher as she rode her bike along a suburban Rochester road last summer.
Both 23-year-old Mark Scerbo of Penfield and 24-year-old Meagan Merkel of Ontario, Wayne County are charged with manslaughter and driving while intoxicated for hitting Heather Boyum with their vehicles last July in Penfield.
Monroe County prosecutors say Scerbo and Merkel were racing and passing each other on Route 250 when police say Scerbo hit the 40-year-old Boyum with his motorcycle. Officials say Merkel then hit Boyum with her car.
Testimony is scheduled to begin Monday morning in a Rochester court. Scerbo and Merkel are being tried at the same time, but with different juries.
