SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The race card for opening day of the 2014 Saratoga season has been revealed.
The gates open at the Saratoga Race Course July 18, and a ten-race card will be available on opening day.
The first race will have a post time of 1 p.m., and the Grade Three Schuylerville is moved up to the third race of the day because of a short field.
The quintet of two-year-old fillies has $150,000 on the line. These kinds of races are Todd Pletcher’s bread and butter. He’s won the last four Saratoga Training titles often by having the best young horses, and he said there’s something really exciting about training tomorrow’s stars.
“Saratoga is a hot bed for some of the best two-year-olds in the world really,” he said. “And it’s always exciting to see these horses come out for the first time and maybe they’ve been training really well, or maybe they’re bred really well or half-sister or brother to a champion. So that’s what makes it fun – trying to find out what you have.”
Johnny Velazquez broke the all-time jockey wins records at the Spa in 2013. He will get the mount on Pletcher’s fashion alert for Friday’s Grade Three Schuylerville.
