TROY, N.Y. – The Joe celebrated Independence Day Friday with a ballgame and fireworks.

The Tri-City ValleyCats played a sold out game Friday, and many fans said they were excited to celebrate the country’s birthday with America’s greatest pastime.

Joe Bruton is a school teacher in the Capital Region. He said he was glad to be in attendance at the ValleyCats game.

“Baseball is a part of our American fabric,” he said. “It’s one of our games, and it’s just wonderful to sit here in a great spot and enjoy America.”

Jaycee Volkmann enjoyed the game with her brother. She said it’s something that has become a Fourth of July tradition in her family.

“It’s our fourth year coming back here,” she said. “We come here every year. It’s fun with our friends and family. It’s a great time.”

Matthew Wyland also took in the game with his loved ones. He said he loves July Fourth because of all the festivities that surround the day.

“I just love the idea of everybody coming out to ballgames and having barbecues and stuff like that. It’s just a great night always,” he said.

And for military families like the Belokopitsky’s and Quinn’s, nights like the Fourth of July are something they treasure.

“There’s nothing more important than the Fourth of July remembering our troops and all of those that came before us,” Kyle Belokopitsky said. “So it’s great to be here with our family and friends to celebrate this great day.”

“It shows what this country is all about,” World War II veteran Charlie Quinn said. “This is still the greatest country in the world despite all the problems we seem to have, and I think people have to be proud to be an American.”
