ALBANY, N.Y. – The University at Albany football team had its first summer practice Monday.
The first game of the season is in exactly 26 days. Head Coach Greg Gattuso doesn’t expect that will be enough time for the group to be a great football team, but he does expect to see some progress.
UAlbany is entering its second season in the Colonial Athletic Association and did not win any league games in 2013. Gattuso said the team needs to build chemistry over the next few weeks of practice for that to change.
“I think that’s a big part of this – how we grow together and how we mold,” he said. “We talked last night about, you know, if we mesh together as a team, we can win games. If we can’t be a team, we’re probably not faster than anybody else. We’re not a whole lot bigger than anybody else. We have to be a great team, and that’s really gonna be the emphasis.”
Holy Cross is the Great Day’s first challenge. Gattuso said he expects to lean on his veteran guys a lot, especially early in the season and in late games.
