SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union Dutchmen will be celebrated in a parade Thursday for their national championship win.

The parade will begin on campus and end at city hall. Fans and residents are encouraged to line the parade route and join the team at city hall in celebration of their 2014 NCAA division one men's ice hockey championship.

And hopes remain high that the spotlight on Union will shine on the college's focus on academics as well as athletics.

Union has 2,200 students and no athletic scholarships, but that didn't stop them from toppling the nation's best to become the newest champs.

School President Stephen Ainlay says he is particularly proud the players won while maintaining the school's high academic standards.

In an era where the term "student athlete" is regularly derided as meaningless, Ainlay says he hopes this team redeems that phrase.
