Fort Myers, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - The Boston Red Sox released pitcher Francisco Cordero on Saturday.

The Red Sox signed Cordero to a minor league contract in February. The right- hander did not make the team despite throwing eight scoreless innings this spring.

Cordero sat out the entire 2013 season after undergoing surgery on his shoulder in early April.

He had split the 2012 season with Houston and Toronto, combining to go 3-8 with a 7.55 earned run average over 47 games.

Over 14 seasons in the majors, he has 329 saves and a 47-53 record with a 3.38 ERA. In addition to Houston and Toronto, he has also pitched for Detroit, Texas, Milwaukee and Cincinnati.

Boston also reassigned pitchers Tommy Layne and Brayan Villarreal, outfielder Corey Brown and infielder Mike McCoy to minor league camp.
