Recap: LA Angels vs. Seattle

Anaheim, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - C.J. Wilson shut down the Mariners for seven innings and C.J. Cron hit a timely three-run homer, as the Los Angeles Angels became the second American League team to clinch their division with a 5-0 win over Seattle.

The Angels' 18th win in their last 22 games, coupled with an Oakland loss against Texas, gave Los Angeles its first AL West title since 2009.

"It's a great feeling, but this is one step. We have to finish strong, we want the feeling of holding the trophy," Angels first baseman Albert Pujols said.

Baltimore won the AL East on Tuesday.

Wilson (13-9) struck out seven and allowed just a hit and three walks. He threw just 95 pitches, but was given the last two innings off after LA's offense erupted for five runs in the bottom of the seventh.

"Give C.J. credit," said Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon. "He made quality pitches all night."

With one away in the seventh, Howie Kendrick ripped a single to right field. David Freese then blooped a single to right that snuck past a charging Chris Denorfia and trickled all the way to the wall. Kendrick was running hard the whole way and scored standing up, and Freese made his way to second.

Tony Campana pinch-ran for Freese and Erick Aybar was walked intentionally. Starter James Paxton struck out Chris Iannetta for the second out, but the Mariners went to the bullpen and the move backfired. Danny Farquhar came on to face Cron, who crushed a 1-1 pitch out to left-center.

The damage wasn't done, however. Farquhar walked Collin Cowgill and Kole Calhoun doubled down the right field line to plate him.

Paxton (6-3) yielded three runs on four hits with eight strikeouts for Seattle, losers in six of seven. The Mariners fell two games behind Kansas City and Oakland for the two AL wild card spots.

After LA put up a five-spot in the seventh, Joe Smith fanned two in the eighth and Huston Street secured the victory with a 1-2-3 ninth.

Game Notes

Angels outfielder Josh Hamilton missed his 12th game in the last 13 with an injured right shoulder ... Cron's home run was his 11th of the season ... Justin Smoak had Seattle's only hit.
