Recap: Edmonton vs. Washington

Edmonton, AB (SportsNetwork.com) - Nikita Nikitin scored the go-ahead goal in the second period and the Edmonton Oilers hung on for a 3-2 win over the Washington Capitals on Wednesday night.

Nikitin tallied on the power play off a high point one-timed slap shot at the 16:08 mark of the frame and Ben Scrivens made 13 of his 32 saves in the third period to preserve the victory.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Justin Schultz also lit the lamp, while Teddy Purcell dished out two assists for Edmonton, which has won two straight following an 0-4-1 start.

"I haven't done anything different the last two games. We're just starting to get bounces," Scrivens said.

Mike Green and John Carlson netted goals for the Capitals, who were the last team in the NHL to suffer a regulation loss. Braden Holtby stopped 17 shots in defeat.

"We played good, we just didn't execute," Capitals center Marcus Johansson said.

Schultz snapped home Purcell's backhanded pass from the left corner to open the score 6:53 into the first period before Carlson's rocket from the high slot tied the score midway through the stanza.

Green rifled a rising wrister past the glove of Scrivens 4:50 into the second, but Edmonton knotted the game just 20 seconds later.

Alexander Ovechkin turned the puck over in his own zone and Nugent-Hopkins flew down the right wing before wristing his shot past Holtby to make it 2-2.

Edmonton went ahead about 11 minutes later.

Game Notes
