Recap: Los Angeles vs. NY Islanders

Los Angeles, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Chad Johnson stopped 28-of-29 shots in regulation and denied both skaters he faced in the shootout to give the New York Islanders a 2-1 victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday.

Johnson stopped Anze Kopitar and Jeff Carter around Kyle Okposo's shootout goal, and Frans Nielsen beat Jonathan Quick between the pads to seal the win.

Brock Nelson scored a power-play goal in the first period for the Islanders, who were coming off an overtime win in Anaheim on Wednesday.

"I think it's one of the best games we've played all year," Islanders head coach Jack Capuano said. "We knew it would be a battle in here tonight. It's a big physical team and I thought we responded."

The Kings had their six-game home winning streak snapped despite Quick making 25 saves.

Dwight King deflected a Mike Richards shot past Johnson 3:49 into the game, and Nelson countered by sneaking one under the crossbar from the right doorstep with 3:28 remaining in the opening frame.

The Islanders failed to cash in on Brayden McNabb's double-minor in the second period and recorded only five shots in the third.

Johnson turned aside 11 shots in the third, including a breakaway by Richards with 6:10 remaining. Richards was slashed by Travis Hamonic before he got the shot off but was not awarded a penalty shot.

"We had good looks, but we missed the net two or three times," Kings head coach Darryl Sutter said of the final 20 minutes of regulation.
