Columbus, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Hannah Wilkinson's goal in the 87th minute allowed New Zealand to claim a 1-1 draw with the United States women's national team on Wednesday at Crew Stadium in a friendly.

Sydney Leroux opened the scoring for the Americans in the 42nd minute after Abby Wambach failed to convert a penalty kick 10 minutes into the match.

But Wilkinson scored on a well-placed shot a few minutes from time, allowing New Zealand to claim a draw after the team lost 4-1 to the U.S. in another friendly this past Sunday.

Heather O'Reilly's cross struck the hand of a New Zealand defender in the 10th minute, which gave the home side a great chance at an early lead.

But Wambach's shot was saved by goalkeeper Erin Nayler, who dove to her right to deny the effort.

Wambach went close again in the 27th with a header that struck the crossbar, but Leroux finally found the net shortly before halftime when she spun past a defender and the rolled the ball into the lower left corner.

The two sides traded chances early in the second half with Wambach having another header saved before U.S. goalkeeper Hope Solo did well to deny Wilkinson from 30 yards.

But Wilkinson made the most of her next chance by dribbling into the penalty area and picking out the corner of the net to earn her side a draw.

The Americans will be in action once again on Nov. 10 when the team plays host to Brazil.
