This morning at 7:00am I saw an unusual sight in the western sky at my home in Spencertown, NY: a double rainbow (second rainbow to left was too faint to capture in photo, but it was defiantly visible). What made this so unexpected was that the weather was mostly clear; there had been no rain. Also unusual was that the cloud formation next to the rainbow made it look as if it was a comet and, as it touched the tree tops, it appeared to be shooting bright color into the one tree that still held its leaves. I'm guessing that this surprise "comet" rainbow was caused by the raising sun's light in the east shining through ice crystals in the upper air. But whatever the cause of this phenomenon, I'm sure glad I woke up early today to experience this beautiful sight! -Kate Frank Cohen, Spencertown, NY
